In 2022, Gerardo Diaz joined Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School in the Bronx as a social worker, supporting students and families with everything from social-emotional counseling to food and rent assistance. As he built relationships in his first year, both in his social work role and as an ESL instructor, he noticed something missing: the school didn’t have a soccer team. So, he started one.
What began as a 10-student after-school club has grown to 20 players who meet weekly at Starlight Park to practice and compete in mini tournaments. But the impact reaches far beyond the field. Gerardo has seen absenteeism drop, grades and self-esteem rise, and new friendships established. Open to students in every grade, the club has created a space where freshmen and upperclassmen connect — sharing homework help, encouragement, and meals — and building a stronger school community together.
This Social Work Month, we celebrate Gerardo and all the social workers at Children’s Aid who go above and beyond to support our children and families in all ways.
