The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) is proud to announce the appointment of Drema Brown to the newly created position of Vice President of Education, effective August 15, 2011. Brown will ensure the success of CAS’s efforts to provide high-quality educational services to children living in under-resourced neighborhoods in New York City.
“Drema will drive the development of The Children’s Aid Society’s first community charter school in the South Bronx and will provide strategic direction in our efforts to meet the highest educational outcomes for children in the communities we serve,” said Richard R. Buery, Jr., CAS President and CEO. “We are thrilled to have someone with the passion, experience and skill needed to improve student achievement.”
The SUNY Charter Schools Institute and the Education, College Readiness and Success Committee of the State University of New York Board of Trustees have approved the opening of the new Children’s Aid Society Community Charter School in the Morrisania section of the Bronx. The school will open in August 2012 and begin offering Kindergarten and 1st grade classes in the fall 2012 semester for some of New York’s most at-risk students.
Brown comes to CAS from New Leaders for New Schools, an organization working to improve the quality of education in urban schools, where she led the design, development and delivery of leadership curriculum for its national principal training program.
Previously, Brown served as principal of P.S. 230X Dr. Roland N. Patterson in the Bronx, where she launched a comprehensive plan to dramatically improve student achievement, increase math and reading proficiency, fund both library and technology upgrades, and elevated the school from the state’s SURR (Schools Under Registration Review) list.
Brown is a graduate of Yale University and also holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University.
